What I used to do to loose my weight before I started focusing on numbers

I try to stick to a 1200 cal limit. This means no more than 1200 cals even though often times I don't even go over 1000.

So after I wake up (between 8-9 depending on what's going on) I have a cup of coffee. Only one maybe two because if I drink more I probably won't go to sleep and we all know how important sleep is to weight loss. Then about an hour later I'll drink a whey drink, sometime I won't drink it until lunch time around one or so. It's actually really good for you because you get all the nutrients from milk without all the fat and its only 156 cals. AWESOME. I try not to eat any solids before 12 sometime I'll have an apple or something if I'm actually hungry but only fruit nothing super solid and heavy. Then sometime between 4 and 6 I'll eat a decent sized linner. Basically any calories I feel like I should take in that day. And that's pretty much it. I try not to eat after 6 but if I must eat late no later than 8. At least I try to follow this I'm still working on my discipline.

To help my discipline I try to do these things:

Shopping:

Buy only food for the next few days, try not to buy in bulk because you may eat more if you are tempted
Skip the Junk Food Aisles
Try to avoid your food-crack (this is the food that no matter how much discipline you may have but one crumb of this and you can just forget about weight loss for who knows how long)
Write a list, get only what's on your list no extra side purchases (if you have kids it's different I know)
Eat before you go shopping
Skip the taste tests they are just calories you don't need and it's one less food you can get hooked on that will make you fat, because let's face it most foods are not eaten for nutritional value but because of the additives that are so addicting that your body is craving
Go shopping when it's not so crowded at the lines so you avoid standing by all those little treats at the register

Eating

Eat only when you are hungry!!!!!!!!!!
Ask yourself: "Are you really hungry?" Then regardless of the answer drink something and then if within two minutes the answer is still yes, then eat. I mistake thirst for hunger sometimes.
Eat only when you are hungry (am I repeating myself?)
If you must snack on something "bad" i.e. chocolate or chips portion it off in the kitchen and if you have self control pack it away and if you don't throw it away (yeah it seems like a waste of money but next time you go to the store you won't buy it because you know you'll have to toss it)
Eat small portions from small dishes.
Eat only until you are full not stuffed, that's where you cross the bounds and get fat
Don't deny yourself anything just stay within YOUR set calorie limit.
Make sure you get all the nutrients you need and remember many vitamins won't even process without fats (Vitamin C) so don't just pop pills to cover the loss

Drinking

Drink ALOT and this is something you read everywhere but DRINK DRINK DRINK
watch what you drink, every calorie you consume counts. Yes even that oh so tasty juice you love so much.
Get the 0 Calorie version of whatever you like best if it's available, most things have a diet version nowadays.
If you're like me and hate water add some lemon juice to you water.
If you must drink high calorie things (for me usually juice) either limit yourself if you have the control or dilute the entire bottle with water that way even if you drink the whole thing it'll probably be stretched a lot further so instead of drinking two bottles that day you only drink that one diluted one. Depending on how you dilute of course i usually do 1:3, one part juice and three parts water. I've gotten used to it.

Cooking

As much as you can make it yourself. This way you can control the amount you make.
Substitute Half & Half (or any coffee creamer that's liquid I guess) for whipping cream when you have to use cream in something (I'm not sure about whipping it haven't tried). It has a lot less fat and won't alter the taste.
Use healthy oils, yeah they cost a bit more but since you're trying to loose weight anyway you don't need a big cheap jug of vegetable oil. Splurge a little on healthy food.
Start baking some dishes, don't always fry everything find recipes that can be made in the oven, or be like me just throw everything in the baking dish put it on 375 and hope it's good when you eat it.
